Assam: Cannabis Worth Rs. 3 Lakhs Seized In Lumding

LUMDING: In another major success in Assam's ongoing war on drugs, as many as 29 kilograms of cannabis were recovered on Sunday at the Lumding Railway Station in Hojai District of Assam.

Based on specific inputs about the transportation of contraband, the Assam Police coordinated a joint operation with the Government Railway Police and seized the contraband substances.

As per information, the total quantity of cannabis was concealed in 28 packets and was recovered from a train coming from Tripura's Agartala to Deoghar.

It is further learnt that the recovery of the ganja was made from coach number S3 of the Agartala-Deoghar express.

Talking to the media, the Officer-in-Charge of Lumding Police Station, Chandan Bora revealed that the market value of the seized cannabis will be approximately Rs. 3 Lakhs in the market.

"Lumding police and Government Railway Police have jointly launched the operation. The market value of the seized ganja is estimated at around Rs 3 lakh. We have registered a case in connection with this," stated the OC of Lumding Police Station.

Further investigation into the case is underway. So far, a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances or NDPS Act.

It may be mentioned here that the Assam Police has been successful to track down and nab several miscreants involved in drug smuggling activities in recent months.

In another coordinated operation, the Assam Police seized as many as 1000 YABA tablets and apprehended two dreaded drug dealers earlier on November 11.

Then in October, the state police in a major success recovered a huge cache of contraband worth approximately Rs. 15 Crore in Karbi Anglong. In the operation, the police seized 2000 kilograms of contraband and apprehended two drug peddlers. Just a few days earlier to this operation, the police seized another huge consignment of contraband worth Rs. 10 Crores from the Karbi Anglong district and arrested four persons in connection.

These latest reports suggest that the Assam Police is acting on a war foot to curtail the menace of drugs in the state.
